Sewing for beginners – 10+years


When: Term 1, 2021 – Sundays 31st January, 7th February, 14th February 3pm-5:30pm (Booked Out)
Term 2, 2021 – Sundays 16th May, 23rd May, 30th May 3pm -5:30pm
Sew with Jo runs beginner block workshops for students who are new to sewing and using a sewing machine Over the three weeks, students will make a comfy cushion and a simple skirt or a pair of shorts.
The cost for the block is $115 and students need to bring the following things to class:
For cushion
- .8 metre (80cm) of cotton fabric
- Matching polyester thread (Gutterman or Mettler brand – 100 metre reel)
For skirt or shorts
- 1.2 metre of cotton fabric
- Matching polyester thread (Gutterman or Mettler brand – 100metre reel)
Please avoid obvious diagonals, chevrons or fabric that requires pattern matching. Sew with Jo will provide cushion insert, Shorts or skirt pattern, elastic and all other equipment needed to complete the projects (notions and use of sewing machine)
Students learn the following skills in this class:
– Threading the sewing machine, winding a bobbin, inserting a bobbin
– How to stitch a seam and fasten off (use of reverse lever)
– How to pin on a pattern and cut out fabric
– How to turn out corners
– Basic pressing
– How to read a commercial pattern
– Finishing seams
– Making a casing and inserting elastic
– Hemming
Class size is limited to 4. As well as the requirements above, please bring your own afternoon tea and water bottle. Please do not bring food containing nuts.
